Letter to the Editor of the White Salmon Enterprise re November 23 editorial

I am surprised you chose the Detroit News editorial. There were more honest editorials from the New York Times and Washington Post regarding the super committee failure, which was no surprise. Four members had voted NO on the Simpson-Bowles plan, and showed no signs of budging. Republicans signed Grover Norquist’s anti-tax pledge, so were not in a mindset for compromise. Had they put country before reelection, perhaps we’d have a deal. The opportunity for a ‘grand bargain’ in July that would have cut  $ 1 trillion in domestic and defense spending, including $650 billion in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, was rejected because it would raise taxes by $1.2 trillion. A second Obama offer to cut over $3 trillion from the deficit, 60% from spending cuts, was also rejected.  Read more... (estimated 1:41 mins reading time)
