Be The Change

Many of us are disappointed in the backwards slide things seem to be taking. Some days you wonder if you are tilting at windmills. Our media, much of it owned by large, wealthy corporations, is out of control yet funding for balanced public reporting is in serious jeopardy. This week we had an example that hit home, with the KATU ‘investigative journalism’ piece on a former appraiser’s suit against the county that was obviously one sided and put our county in a very bad light.

Story of Citizens United v FEC

A few weeks ago Klickitat Democrat, Bob Hansen, hosted a house party to view the short (10 minutes!) film, “The Story of Citizens United v. FEC”.

This film was created by the same folks at The Story of Stuff Project and describes the landmark case in which the U.S. Supreme Court decided that it is unconstitutional to limit how much money corporations can spend to influence elections.

Since the 2010 ruling, corporations have spent $300 million to influence election results. This money has been used to run ads and engage in other activities to sway us – the voters – to support candidates who serve the interests of those corporations.
